About Music Together ®

[Classroom Photo]Music Together is a music and movement approach to early childhood music development for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarten children and their parents, teachers, and other primary caregivers. Originally offered to the public in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement.

Music Together classes are based on the belief that music is as much a basic life skill as walking and talking, and that all children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence and pleasure in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning. By emphasizing actual musical experiences rather than concepts about music, we introduce children to the pleasures of making music instead of passively receiving it from CD's or television. Intergral to our program is the idea that young children respond best to music when surrounded by those with whom they have a close bond. Consequently, the active participation of parents and caregivers is an essential part of the rich musical environment we create. The class experience, reinforced by listening to CD's and parent involvement, stimulates learning at home through play.

"Children must receive music instruction as naturally as food, with as much pleasure as they derive from a ball game, and this must happen from the beginning of their lives."
